You may well have heard me on talk radio – I am regularly interviewed on personal development and self improvement. A few days back, I sent out a couple of emails to radio producers so that I could tell listeners about getting more out of life even during these difficult times. One guy came back to me with the following response “come on, man, get real”. That’s all he said.

No, you get real! There are too many downbeat people with a bad attitude that’s fanning the flames of the fire of economic turmoil and individual self-doubt. The herd mentality got the economy into the mess it’s in (we’ll all get greedy together) the herd mentality will keep it there (now we’re all needy together). You have to wake the hell up – because, if you don’t that’s where you are – in Hell, a hell of your own creation. And there’s simply so much of it going on right now.

If you happen to be one of those so-called normal people who take some weird pleasure in talking about how bad things are, shut up! If, like someone that I came across recently, you’re too self-conscious to tell your friends that you can still afford to take your winter ski break, ask yourself “what’s that all about?” If you’re really hurting because you can’t find work, stop playing the victim. Rather than cowering down under the weight of collective depression, step away from the herd, open your eyes and you’ll find that there are opportunities all over the place, the only reason you can’t see them is that you’ve bought into the negative illusion that is dragging you down. You must stop going along with everyone else that there are no opportunities, get up off your ass and get real – really!

And to my friend who told me to get real – get a life and stop dragging everyone else down to your level! It’s about time we stopped this mass-madness – it’s time to start pulling ourselves together and start living life to the full.

Their perception of their own intellectual skills did not relate to the physiology of their brains – it was related to the fact that, during their formative years, they had incorrectly learned their strengths and weaknesses which, as adults, prevented them from using their brains in an expansive way.

We all have incorrect beliefs about ourselves – we were each conditioned during our formative years – now, those self-perceptions prevent us from experiencing and benefiting from our true potential. But, if the head is in a fog, the heart is obscured behind a veil of much more destructive useless thought – thoughts that have been skulking in the shadows since our formative years – thoughts that the subconscious mind likes to dwell on – and the subconscious mind is most likely to cosy up to those thoughts if they’re negative. So, when most of us listen to our hearts, we’re hearing something that’s been grossly distorted by our own programming and conditioning so that we end up believing that we know what will make us happy – which is often a far cry from what is truly best for us.

So, if you really want to listen to your gut instinct or your heart, you’re going to have to get past this veil of deep-seated thought and the only way that you can do that – and it’s kind of obvious when you think about it – is to clear your mind. We all need to clear our mind completely – it will enable us distinguish the wood from the trees! But, more than that, a clear mind is an inspired mind and it is through inspiration that we are best guided towards our ideal life.

This provides a clear picture of how time is spent. Many people are surprised to see how much time is spent engaged in time wasters such as internet surfing or watching television.

Visualize a Balanced Life

To visualize balance in life, relax and imagine an ideally balanced day. Feel the sense of ease and deep satisfaction. Picture the ideal work and home environments, a stress-free commute, and fulfilling leisure activities. Feel the emotions, and experience the sensory images. When the image is clear and feels real, go through the exercise again, this time writing down all the details and feelings. Be as specific as possible.

Set Life Balance Goals

To set goals that will help improve life balance, begin by reading through the balanced day exercise and compare it to the time tracking diary and life balance wheel used for the initial assessment. What needs to change to live that ideal day? Make a list of things that are not in alignment with the vision, such as chaotic mornings before work or evenings spent in volunteer activities. Don’t worry about how to make the changes yet, just write down everything that comes up.

When the list feels complete, choose 2-3 items from the list and use these as a focus. Select something that is achievable in a relatively short time to build momentum. Be clear and specific, writing each goal as if it were already accomplished, such as, “I play guitar for an hour every evening after work.”

Create an Action Plan for a Balanced Life

Life coaches recommend breaking goals down into specific, actionable measures. Think about the necessary steps to make the goal a reality. Using the example of playing guitar for an hour each evening, one possible action step might be cooking in large quantities on the weekend so meals can be microwaved during the week.

Depending on personal circumstances, other action steps to find an hour to play guitar after work might include cutting back on television viewing or hiring help for cleaning and yard work. Perform the action steps, and when a goal has been met, practice the new routine for a few weeks until it is a firmly established habit. Choose new goals at a comfortable pace.

When a client participates in a life coaching program, they learn that maintaining a balanced life is an ongoing process. Skills are introduced to help clients stay on track.
